Invitation to Participate: Fertility Tracking Study (Premom® App) – Ottawa Area

Virtual / From home REB-approved (Bruyère Health) Age 16–45 3 cycles (about 3–4 months)

Principal Investigator: Dr. René Leiva, MD, CCFP, FCFP

Study Purpose

This study compares combinations of fertility indicators—cervical mucus, urinary LH, urinary PDG, and basal body temperature (BBT)—to learn which method most accurately identifies ovulation and estimates luteal phase length. (Premom® app-based tracking.)

Who Can Participate

  • Age 16–45
  • Menstrual cycles 35 days or fewer
  • Off hormonal contraception for at least 3 months
  • Already using the Premom® App to track cycles
  • Live within 50 km of Ottawa, Canada
  • Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding

A research assistant will confirm eligibility after you express interest.

What Participation Involves

  • Track fertility signs for 3 menstrual cycles (about 3–4 months).
  • Record daily information in the Premom® app.
  • Observe and record cervical mucus (simple scoring system).
  • Use urine test strips for LH and PDG (provided at no cost).
  • Measure BBT each morning with a thermometer (provided at no cost).
  • Upload photos of LH and PDG strips to the app.
  • Upload tracking information to the study’s secure OneDrive portal.
  • Complete a short questionnaire at the end of the study.
You do not need to come to the clinic — the study is completed entirely from home.

Time Commitment

Daily tracking takes about 5–10 minutes/day. Over 3–4 months, the total time commitment is approximately 15–16 hours, including brief check-ins.

Risks and Benefits

This is a low-risk study. Testing is non-invasive (urine testing, temperature measurement, and mucus observation). Some people may experience mild inconvenience (time commitment) or mild emotional discomfort when reviewing fertility results.

You may gain a better understanding of your cycle patterns. You will receive test supplies at no cost. While there may be no direct personal benefit, your participation helps improve fertility tracking methods.

Privacy

Your information will be coded (e.g., ID01) to protect your identity. Identifying information is stored separately, securely, and only accessible to the research team. Data are stored securely in the Bruyère-hosted OneDrive portal. Only aggregate results will be reported.
